News Flash:  Sleep is key to health and wellness.

It seems like these days everyone is working on the sleep-fitness equation.  Individuals–anyone want to code up their own health dashboard?–and major corporations (gyms, wellness programs, weight loss programs) are looking for ways to integrate sleep into their health and wellness efforts.  To help them out, we’ve decided to develop an Open API so that anyone on the web can utilize the power of sleep in their application.  And I’m happy to say that today, you too now can use our metrics, tools, and database to make that sweet app you’ve been dreaming about.

As if that wasn’t enough this Open API is also the next step in the direction of freeing all of your Zeo sleep data This follows on the data download feature we released last fall and on our belief that Zeo users should be able to use their data however they’d like.

To get more details on the Open API, check out this press release or the excerpt below.  If you’d like access to the Open API, sign up here.

First-to-Market Development of Sleep Measurement API

For the first time, developers will be able to access Zeo’s unique nightly sleep data including:

  • Total Z – Total Sleep Time
  • Amount of Deep Sleep
  • Amount of REM Sleep
  • Number of Times Woken
  • ZQ – A cumulative measure of one night of sleep that takes into account total sleep time and quality of sleep (the amount of restorative sleep achieved and disrupted sleep)
  • Two leading personal health resources are offering initial Alpha programs, planning to integrate Zeo’s unique sleep measurement tools into their everyday body metric systems.

These include DailyBurn, which IAC recently acquired a majority stake in and will be managed by Mindspark, and RunKeeper, a mobile fitness platform for smartphones like iPhone and Android that enables runners and other fitness enthusiasts to track, measure, and improve their fitness.

DailyBurn will add ZQ and Total Z to its body metrics tracking, allowing users to better understand the relationship between sleep and their weight loss. RunKeeper will track users’ activity and compare against nutrition, weight and sleep.  Sign up here to get access: http://developers.myzeo.com/web-api/

We are excited by the possibilities for the Zeo Open API and hope to hear from you all on ways you can conceive of using this!

Would rather a more open approach with SD card data. Most of us users would more value the ability to keep using the Zeo should your company go under. I just got mine and this aspect is making me consider whether to send it back or not.

    Tom,
We agree with you – it’s your data and you should be able to do what you like with it. We plan to offer a special version of Zeo firmware that removes encryption on the SD Card and give some specifications and software to decode that SD Card file without going online. I don’t yet have a delivery date or confirmation that this is definitely happening soon – but we are working towards it and do believe as you do – its your data and you should be able to use it as you like.
    Best, Ben

    Tom,
We just released a Data Decoder Library that opens up the data on the SD card.

You can check out the release and download it here:

Ben, you may want to weigh in over at the dailyburn support forums; we’re a little bummed out that the alpha test for Zeo integration is not yet live.

Thanks for pointing me at that. The comments are closed over there so I can’t put anything up – but here is my reply:

Andy (Dailyburn CEO) and I started discussing a Zeo + Dailyburn integration when we met in Boston last February. We were hugely excited about the opportunity for users on both sides of the fence to tie together the three poles of health and wellness – diet, exercise, and sleep. By June Dailyburn had developed the capability to integrate data into their user experience (ie. the Withings and Bodytrace integrations) and Zeo had developed an alpha version of our data API. Zeo decided to publicize the existence of this API – a great way for us to find good partners to work with on the project. I spoke with Andy and since we were both excited to get started we decided to announce Dailyburn as one of our first API partners. Then reality struck – both at Zeo and Dailyburn – priorities left and right came up to delay the integration. Good news though – we have been in touch and we are now moving forward full-steam on an integration. I don’t want to promise dates (especially with two parties involved it’s tough) – but we hear you and we are making good progress.

I just want to say that I will be purchasing a zeo simply based on your data integration. The fact that you listen to people right on the blog and implement the features they request within extremely short amounts of time is very very impressive. Hats off to your company.
